OCVL Ladder System

The OCVL has a set calendar for its regularseason, playoffs, and days of the week.

  • Men's division: Monday.
  • Women's division: Tuesday.

The gym locations and times played vary each week depending on your win/loss result.

The ladder is updated automatically once teams have submitted their wins and losses.

All games will be best of 5 sets (sets to 25, 5th set to 15), except if there is a tier of 3 (see below).

Each tier will consist of 4 teams with the top 2 teams playing each other and the bottom 2 teams playing each other.

The "ladder system" is used for regular season games within a 2-week cycle. After week 1, teams will move up, down or stay, within the tier, based on their win/loss. On week 2, teams will move up or down within the tier or to a different tier depending on their win/loss results.

Week 1 – Games are played 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4. Placements for the following week are:

  • Team 1 – Winner of the 1 vs 2 game
  • Team 2 – Winner of the 3 vs 4 game
  • Team 3 – Loser of the 1 vs 2 game
  • Team 4 – Loser of the 3 vs 4 game

Week 2 – Games are played 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4. Placements for the following week are:

  • Winner of the 1 vs 2 game goes up a tier to Team 4 in the tier above*
  • Loser of the 1 vs 2 game will become Team 3 in the current tier
  • Winner of the 3 vs 4 game will become Team 2 in the current tier
  • Loser of the 3 vs 4 game will become Team 1 in the tier below*

* The top and bottom team in the league remain in their current position.

Occasionally, we are required to introduce 3 and 6 team tiers, depending on the number of teams registered and gym availability. The rules for those tiers are as follows.

6-Team Tier

Games will be best of 5 sets (sets to 25, 5th set to 15).

Week 1 – Games are played 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4 and 5 vs 6. Placements for the following week are:

  • Team 1 – Winner of the 1 vs 2 game
  • Team 2 – Winner of the 3 vs 4 game
  • Team 3 – Loser of the 1 vs 2 game
  • Team 4 – Winner of the 5 vs 6 game
  • Team 5 – Loser of the 3 vs 4 game
  • Team 6 – Loser of the 5 vs 6 game

Week 2 – Games are played 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4 and 5 vs 6. Placements for the following week are:

  • Winner of the 1 vs 2 game goes up a tier to Team 4 in the tier above
  • Loser of the 1 vs 2 game will become Team 3 in that tier
  • Winner of the 3 vs 4 game will become Team 2 in that tier
  • Loser of the 3 vs 4 game will become Team 5 in that tier
  • Winner of the 5 vs 6 game will become Team 4 in that tier
  • Loser of the 5 vs 6 game will become Team 1 in the tier below
3-Team Tier

Each team will play against each other in a mini round-robin format. Games will be best of 3 sets (sets to 25, 3rd set to 15), and will be played as follows:

  • Game 1 - Team 1 vs. Team 3
  • Game 2 - Team 1 vs. Team 2
  • Game 3 - Team 2 vs. Team 3

There are 2 possible outcomes:

  1. 2 wins, 1 win, 0 wins
  2. Each team has 1 win (3-way tie). If there is a 3-way tie, the teams will maintain their existing rank.

Week 1 – A round-robin of games are played and the teams will be re-ranked 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Week 2 – Teams re-rank

  • 1st place team will go up a tier to Team 4 in the division above
  • 2nd place team will remain in the tier as Team 2
  • 3rd place team will become Team 1 in the tier below (unless this is the bottom tier)

Schedule Fairness

The 3-Team tier weekly schedule will automatically modify the match order so that no team will play the split two weeks in a row.
